Professor Shimano specializes in animal systematics. He discovers new species, assigns them scientific names, and investigates the evolutionary processes that have shaped them. To date, he has named more than 50 new species. In recent years, he has also been working to apply taxonomic knowledge to identify endangered species and contribute to their conservation.

His research on feather mites found on the Japanese crested ibis and the Okinawa rail led Professor Shimano to engage in conservation activities for the endangered white-bellied heron in Bhutan. As the representative of Japan's white-bellied heron conservation team, he works alongside experts in collaboration with the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) in Bhutan. In 2024, the team achieved significant success, including artificial incubation and chick rearing.

Please read the interview with Professor Shimano, who seeks to elucidate biodiversity and evolution, and contributes to the conservation of endangered species.
